Our new BOPA Fellow – Ally McMurray

The BOPA committee is proud to announce that our newest BOPA Fellow is Alastair (Ally) McMurray who ‘has long been a role model for oncology pharmacists and pharmacy technicians, both locally and internationally’. 

Fellowship of the British Oncology Pharmacy Association is conferred on the recommendation of the Executive Committee (following a nomination or consultation process that includes membership) in recognition of an outstanding contribution to the work of BOPA and/or supporting oncology pharmacy in its widest sense’

Here are some facts about Ally
•He started off as Oncology pharmacist in the Beatson Cancer Centre in Glasgow and is now Managing Director of Medac Pharma UK in Stirling
•He has 30+ Years in oncology, and is one of BOPA’s founders
•He served on BOPA exec 1998 -2005
•Developed faculty (with RPS) and competency framework
•He is a key advocate for our profession
•He has chaired many meetings for BOPA, and delivered countelss sessions always informative and with his unique humour
•He taught many BOPA members to be oncology pharmacists
•He sponsors posters prizes each year
•He was our Guinness book of record compare and lucky charm in 2017

In summer of 2019 Allygoing to undertake a gruelling sporting challenge to raise money for cancer charities, Ally ambition is to raise £100,000 and split for two charities – Leukaemia and Lymphoma (now Bloodwise) and Brain cancer. Here’s what he’s going to attempt:

  • Saturday 10th August 2019:  Playing tennis for 12 hours, non-stop against different opponent every hour. Each game will be competitive.
     
  • Monday 12th August to Thursday 22nd 2019: Cycling from Land’s End to John O’ Groats. On his own, carrying all clothing etc. Around 150 – 160km per day
     
  • Saturday 24th August 2019: Swimming 20km in University pool (800 lengths). Will take around 13 hours.
     
  • September 2019: Running 30 half marathons. Running half marathon each day in September (must run each one in under 2 hours)
