Speaker Profile:

Birgit has been working in Cancer Services for almost 20 years.

She studied pharmacy in Germany in the 1990s before moving to the UK in 2002. She started as a basic grade pharmacist in Derriford Hospital Plymouth and became interested in oncology and haematology during the Bath Clinical Diploma. Since 2005 she has been working in various roles within the Cancer Services Team in Plymouth. Currently she is mostly involved with the safe and prompt implementation of new anticancer therapies and the training of other healthcare professionals in those new therapies. Birgit likes to learn and keep up to date with new therapies. In 2010 she completed a Master’s in Clinical Oncology with the University of Birmingham. She qualified as a NMP in 2011 however sadly due to the set up in Plymouth she never had the opportunity to develop her skills. She is hopeful that this will change one day in the future.

Birgit’s life reached a bit of a turning point when she was diagnosed with early breast cancer in spring 2021 during the Covid pandemic. Suddenly she was on the receiving end of breast and oncology services. As a result of this cancer diagnosis and various other life changing events Birgit is now focussing even more on leading a healthy lifestyle and wants to enjoy life more fully. Recently she started a yoga teacher training course with the Devon School of Yoga and is hoping to combine pharmacy and yoga in the future.

Best Wishes
