AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF DR MARIE JOSEPH MBBS FRCP

I qualified in 1981 with a first class honours degree in Medicine from the University of Colombo, Sri-Lanka.

I became a member of the Royal College of Physicians UK in 1985, and was honoured as a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians in 2005.

My initial desire to pursue a career in cardiology was unexpectedly diverted by a patient in profound cancer pain. This led me to pursue a career in palliative medicine, with a passion for cancer pain management since 1989.

After working as medical director in a hospice for 18 years, my desire was to give my services, skills and knowledge to the NHS. Hence, I am pleased and privileged to have joined East and North Hertfordshire NHS Trust as Consultant lead in palliative medicine, with special expertise in complex cancer pain management. In particular, I am keen to reduce the phenomenon of ‘opioid induced hyperalgesia’ by the judicious and timely use of co-analgesic adjuvants with modest opioid doses.

As an accredited RCP educator, I teach medical students, emphasising the importance of combining clinical excellence with empathy in caring for patients.

I am currently in the process of writing a book entitled ‘The Pain of Cancer’, hopefully to be published later this year.

Outside of medicine, I enjoy playing classical music on the piano. I am grateful to the support given to me by my husband and my daughter, who has recently qualified as a doctor. I derive my inner strength from my faith as a Christian Catholic.
