Expressions of interest for Expert Panel Sub Group to support the approval and implementation of Standardised Product Specifications

The Infusions and Special Medicines Programme is inviting expressions of interest for an expanded Expert Panel Sub Group to support the approval and implementation of Standardised Product Specifications across NHS aseptic services.

This workstream forms part of the wider programme established following the 2020 Department of Health and Social Care report, Transforming NHS Pharmacy Aseptic Services in England. Significant work has continued in the background over recent years to develop and refine standardised product specifications. Following a review of this work and the recent reinvigoration of the standardisation programme, we are now entering the next phase of delivery.

A network of expert authors is currently developing and updating standardised product specifications. To support this increased activity, we are seeking additional subject matter experts to join the Expert Panel Sub Group and undertake the review and approval of specifications before publication and implementation across NHS aseptic services. This work is fundamental to delivering a more consistent, scalable and high-quality approach to aseptically prepared medicines.

Training and guidance will be provided to support members undertaking specification reviews. This will include an overview of the standardised product specification framework, the review and approval process, and the governance arrangements that underpin the workstream. Supporting materials, review templates and opportunities to discuss queries with the expert authors group.

We are seeking individuals with relevant expertise to join the approvers sub group in the following roles:

  • Operational specialists currently working in NHS aseptic compounding units (MHRA-authorised or Section 10 exempt), with experience in managing product changes and introducing new ways of working.
  • Quality assurance specialists with expertise in process change, product development and implementation within aseptic services.
  • Nurse specialists with experience administering chemotherapy, familiar with a range of delivery formats (e.g. syringes, infusion bags and elastomeric devices).

Sub Group Responsibilities

  • Reviewing and approving product specifications under the governance of the Standardisation Expert Panel.
  • Providing constructive feedback to specification authors.
  • Supporting the adoption and implementation of standardised specifications across the NHS.

Time Commitment

Flexible, depending on the number of members, with specification reviews and ad hoc engagement as requested by the Chair of the Expert Panel.
