SUMMARY:[LIVE] Challenges & Success of Complex Cancer Pain Management - A BOPA Education & Training Webinar
DESCRIPTION:Wednesday 18th May 2022 at 18:30 – 19:30 BST – Click HERE to register\n  \nThe BOPA Education and Training Subcommittee would like to invite you to one of our live webinar sessions on Challenges & Success of Complex Cancer Pain Management. \n  \nThe session will be delivered by: Dr Marie Joseph\, Lead Consultant in Palliative Medicine\, East and North Hertfordshire NHS Trust\n  \nThis webinar is FREE for all BOPA members.\n(A BOPA FREE or PAID membership is required for registration. Join here)\n  \nAUTOBIOGRAPHY OF DR MARIE JOSEPH MBBS FRCP\n \nI qualified in 1981 with a first class honours degree in Medicine from the University of Colombo\, Sri-Lanka. \nI became a member of the Royal College of Physicians UK in 1985\, and was honoured as a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians in 2005. \nMy initial desire to pursue a career in cardiology was unexpectedly diverted by a patient in profound cancer pain. This led me to pursue a career in palliative medicine\, with a passion for cancer pain management since 1989. \nAfter working as medical director in a hospice for 18 years\, my desire was to give my services\, skills and knowledge to the NHS. Hence\, I am pleased and privileged to have joined East and North Hertfordshire NHS Trust as Consultant lead in palliative medicine\, with special expertise in complex cancer pain management. In particular\, I am keen to reduce the phenomenon of ‘opioid induced hyperalgesia’ by the judicious and timely use of co-analgesic adjuvants with modest opioid doses. \nAs an accredited RCP educator\, I teach medical students\, emphasising the importance of combining clinical excellence with empathy in caring for patients. \nI am currently in the process of writing a book entitled ‘The Pain of Cancer’\, hopefully to be published later this year. \nOutside of medicine\, I enjoy playing classical music on the piano. I am grateful to the support given to me by my husband and my daughter\, who has recently qualified as a doctor. I derive my inner strength from my faith as a Christian Catholic. \n  \nRegister for your free place now via the link at the top of the page. (Note: You must be at least a BOPA FREE member.) Join here \nWe look forward to welcoming you all on the 18th May. \nBest Wishes\nAlkesh Patel and Bastiaan Buijtenhuijs\nCo-chairs of BOPA Education & Training Subcommittee

SUMMARY:UK Oncology Forum 2021 (Virtual)
DESCRIPTION:  \n \n  \nAfter a challenging year in healthcare\, we now enter a new and more positive era of relaxed rules\, regulations and cautious optimism. The vaccination programme\, continues to improve our working environment and every-day living. \nAs our speciality includes treating vulnerable patients\, the UK Oncology Forum Faculty all agree it would be wrong to encourage large gatherings of cancer HCPs in 2021. We have therefore decided to hold the 2021 UKOF in a virtual setting. We hope to be able to all meet up again next year in person. \nWe have designed the 2021 programme to include important discussion around the Covid-19 crisis and its impact on cancer treatments and services across the UK. But more importantly what we have learnt and the need to diseminate and share best practice. \nWe have worked hard to secure some of the top cancer experts from across the UK and Europe for all of the tumour clinical sessions. In addition to ESMO highlights we will also include important updates from ASCO. \nThe meeting will be CME accredited. With this in mind and to give this first class oncology meeting the respect that it deserves\, we are urging all of our delegates to apply for study leave and to join the meeting virtually for the duration of the course. Some Trusts also have stringent “firewalls” that make logging in to Virtual Meetings difficult and in some cases\, impossible. \nWe could not have delivered this virtual meeting without the unwavering support of our sponsors from Industry. We would like to give special thanks to them for their loyalty and continued support of the UKOF. We urge you to visit them in the Virtual Exhibition and our friends and colleagues from other UK national cancer organisations. \n\nMostly\, thank you for sticking with us. This meeting continues to flourish and we look forward to 2022 when hopefully we will have the pleasure of all meeting together again in a safe environment.\n \n\nWe look forward to welcoming you “virtually” to the 2021 Virtual UK Oncology Forum. If you have not yet applied for your Study Leave\, please do so as soon as possible. \n  \n\nKindest regards\n \nProfessor Ruth Plummer and the UK Oncology Forum Faculty
