SUMMARY:A Life in a Day: the power of empathy training strategies and their impact on clinical practice
DESCRIPTION:Join BOPA vice chair Emma Foreman and A Life in a Day Founder Mark Doyle on 7 February as they discuss the power of empathy training strategies and their impact on clinical practice. \nTime and Date: Tue 7 Feb 1pm GMT / 2pm CET \nEarlier in November authors from British Oncology Pharmacy Association (BOPA) and UK Oncology Nursing Society (UKONS)\, including Emma Foreman\, published a research paper with their results showcasing the impact role reversal system (RRS) such as A Life in a Day has on increasing empathy and changing practice in HCPs. \nAt the same time reports into compassion fatigue\, or empathy burnout\, describe the impact and the ‘cost of caring’. Are we going too far with promoting the need to be empathetic? \nIn this webinar\, we will review the report and discuss the impact RRS can have on healthcare professionals and the wider healthcare and pharmaceutical sectors. We will also tackle questions including: \n\nHow can RSS inspire changes in clinical practise?\nWho benefits most – medical students? Nursing staff? Consultants?\nIn a challenging financial environment – should budgets for softer skills development be a priority?\n\nContact us before the webinar on 7 February with any questions you may wish to propose to Mark or Emma below. \nMore details at:  https://alifeinaday.co.uk/2023/01/03/should-hcps-receive-training-to-be-more-empathetic-will-it-benefit-patients-or-is-there-a-danger-of-empathy-fatigue/

SUMMARY:BOPA E&T [Live Online Webinar] Adjuvant Endocrine Therapy for Hormone Receptor Positive Breast Cancer from a Dual Perspective
DESCRIPTION:Wednesday 30th November 2022 at 19:00 – 20:00 GMT – Click HERE to register\n  \nThe BOPA Education and Training Subcommittee would like to invite you to one of our live webinar sessions on Adjuvant Endocrine Therapy for Hormone Receptor Positive Breast Cancer from a dual perspective. \n  \nThe session will be delivered by: Birgit Cloos\, Cancer Services Pharmacist\, University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust\n\n  \nThis webinar is FREE for all BOPA members and associates.\nClick here to join BOPA\n  \nBIOGRAPHY OF BIRGIT\nBirgit has been working in Cancer Services for almost 20 years. \nShe studied pharmacy in Germany in the 1990s before moving to the UK in 2002. She started as a basic grade pharmacist in Derriford Hospital Plymouth and became interested in oncology and haematology during the Bath Clinical Diploma. Since 2005 she has been working in various roles within the Cancer Services Team in Plymouth. Currently she is mostly involved with the safe and prompt implementation of new anticancer therapies and the training of other healthcare professionals in those new therapies. Birgit likes to learn and keep up to date with new therapies. In 2010 she completed a Master’s in Clinical Oncology with the University of Birmingham. She qualified as a NMP in 2011 however sadly due to the set up in Plymouth she never had the opportunity to develop her skills. She is hopeful that this will change one day in the future. \nBirgit’s life reached a bit of a turning point when she was diagnosed with early breast cancer in spring 2021 during the Covid pandemic. Suddenly she was on the receiving end of breast and oncology services. As a result of this cancer diagnosis and various other life changing events Birgit is now focussing even more on leading a healthy lifestyle and wants to enjoy life more fully. Recently she started a yoga teacher training course with the Devon School of Yoga and is hoping to combine pharmacy and yoga in the future. \n \nRegister for your free place now via the link at the top of the page. SUMMARY:[LIVE] Challenges & Success of Complex Cancer Pain Management - A BOPA Education & Training Webinar
DESCRIPTION:Wednesday 18th May 2022 at 18:30 – 19:30 BST – Click HERE to register\n  \nThe BOPA Education and Training Subcommittee would like to invite you to one of our live webinar sessions on Challenges & Success of Complex Cancer Pain Management. \n  \nThe session will be delivered by: Dr Marie Joseph\, Lead Consultant in Palliative Medicine\, East and North Hertfordshire NHS Trust\n  \nThis webinar is FREE for all BOPA members.\n(A BOPA FREE or PAID membership is required for registration. Join here)\n  \nAUTOBIOGRAPHY OF DR MARIE JOSEPH MBBS FRCP\n \nI qualified in 1981 with a first class honours degree in Medicine from the University of Colombo\, Sri-Lanka. \nI became a member of the Royal College of Physicians UK in 1985\, and was honoured as a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians in 2005. \nMy initial desire to pursue a career in cardiology was unexpectedly diverted by a patient in profound cancer pain. This led me to pursue a career in palliative medicine\, with a passion for cancer pain management since 1989. \nAfter working as medical director in a hospice for 18 years\, my desire was to give my services\, skills and knowledge to the NHS. Hence\, I am pleased and privileged to have joined East and North Hertfordshire NHS Trust as Consultant lead in palliative medicine\, with special expertise in complex cancer pain management. In particular\, I am keen to reduce the phenomenon of ‘opioid induced hyperalgesia’ by the judicious and timely use of co-analgesic adjuvants with modest opioid doses. \nAs an accredited RCP educator\, I teach medical students\, emphasising the importance of combining clinical excellence with empathy in caring for patients. \nI am currently in the process of writing a book entitled ‘The Pain of Cancer’\, hopefully to be published later this year. \nOutside of medicine\, I enjoy playing classical music on the piano. I am grateful to the support given to me by my husband and my daughter\, who has recently qualified as a doctor. I derive my inner strength from my faith as a Christian Catholic. \n  \nRegister for your free place now via the link at the top of the page. (Note: You must be at least a BOPA FREE member.) Join here \nWe look forward to welcoming you all on the 18th May. \nBest Wishes\nAlkesh Patel and Bastiaan Buijtenhuijs\nCo-chairs of BOPA Education & Training Subcommittee
